Centre to boost SMEs, end licence raj, says Union Minister Sitharaman

Praising the entrepreneurship of people from Mangaluru and the surrounding areas, the Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday said the Union government was keen to be an enabler for them.

Promising more steps to end the licence raj, she said industries and State governments were important stake-holders in improving the country’s growth rate.

The government will not be a regulator where industry inspections are carried our “every half an hour” she said while delivering a talk on commerce policy. It was organised by Mangaluru Initiative for Nationalist Dialogue.

Asserting that the country’s potential had to be utilised to “Make for India” with “Team India,” the Minister said small and medium enterprises, which provided about 60 million jobs though they contributed only 8 per cent to the GDP, would be encouraged.

Stressing the need for India to keep pace with the global trend where economic concerns play more important role in international relations rather than political considerations, she assured that India would however protect the unique realities of India. India had to ensure, for example, a course correction with regard to Bali Agreement of World Trade Organisation so that farmers’ interests are protected. There was a need shift workers from agriculture – the sector where 60 per cent of the people were still working, she said.

Productivity in agriculture also needed a boost.

Though service sector was contributing more to GDP, thrust was being given to manufacturing because it could contribute much better for the economy. But the Government would not ignore service sector and a conclave had been planned to address concerns of the sector in April.

Stating that revamping the Planning Commission was being criticised without looking into the huge groundwork that had gone into it.

With the changes made, the State Governments no longer needed to have “Bhikshandehi” (begging) attitude.

She said there was no application before the Government to increase Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail trade.

Earlier, she told presspersons that the Pakistan had given most favoured nation status despite ministerial level meetings in this regard.

The trade between the two countries is expected improve if the status is given. India had given such a status to Pakistan in 1996.

Objections have been invited to the draft policy on “intellectual property rights” (IPR) and the think tank constituted on the issue would consider the objections before the policy is finalised.

It’s considered as the backbone of the national economy. Since SME’s play a pivotal role in the economy, they are given importance by the Government. But their needs are not fulfilled completely, they still face issues and obstacles in bringing up their business. All the SME’s face common problems. Some face legal issues, some face raw materials manufacturing issues, and some gets budged by the government norms as they are not well aware of it. The SME’s main issue is lack of Knowledge.  The SME thinking should change from an industry based economy to a knowledgebase one. KSMBOA: Revitalization for SMEs

Why do you focus so much on SMEs? Well if you ask me, SMEs are extremely important for India since they contribute to more than 40% of India’s GDP, which is a lot more than most other enterprises do. India currently has more than 48 million SMEs and India’s government has promised to make business a less traumatic process for entrepreneurs. SMEs in India have seen exponential growth over the last decade. However, funds focusing on SMEs are having difficulties in raising money, among other challenges. The reality is that although this sector plays a vital role in giving a boost to the overall GDP, it is still overlooked by the corporate sector & the Government. Not much is being done to promote their healthy growth and development. SMEs expect focus on key challenges and want definitive schemes and programs to help solve pending matters.

Karnataka Small & Medium Business Owner’s Association (KSMBOA) is the apex body that is determined in bringing together all the SME’s in Karnataka and to promote the best practices in the industry, by providing SMEs with the best resources and methods they need to face the challenges. KSMBOA identifies the strengths and weakness of SMEs in their business, it facilitates the largest network of successful entrepreneurs from Karnataka and creates a unique networking platform to enhance business opportunities. Be part of KSMBOA’s knowledge base and get educated and trained in various aspects of running a successful Business.

Entrepreneurs: Are you unintentionally holding back your potential?

So why do most SMEs entrepreneurs hesitate to make the leap?  In the past, in order to have ERP or CRM or HRMs software implied a very large investment. More than the investment, many smaller enterprises, most of them out of the city, were obstructed by the lack of skilled resources or support. Most of the factors like these conspired to keep businesses from unlocking their true potential. Karnataka Small & Medium Business Owner’s Association (KSMBOA) realizes the fact that there are many obstacles faced by an entrepreneur due to lack of resources, government and corporate norms, lack of skilled workforce etc. Hence KSMBOA aims to make sure that all the resources are made accessible to the SMEs, train and educate the businesses so that they can implement the highest technology in the market and have the competitive edge over others and flourish to their full potential. KSMBOA ultimately wants to make the life of an entrepreneur easy.

SMEs are encouraged to become members of this association and grab all the benefits offered to a member. KSMBOA is devoted to networking, capacity building, advocacy and promotion of its member firms, it works consistently to improve the welfare of its members.

SME – Potential Unlimited

There are around 105 lakh SME Units in India. The SME sector employs around 3 Crore people.  SME Sector has emerged as a dynamic and vibrant sector of the economy. The Potential of an SME is never small. They often reach greater heights in their Entrepreneurship journey. But having said that, Have SME’s achieved all this that easily??? Are they satisfied with the growth??? Nope… Not unless they have a platform for them to share their issues and problems. SME’s often face certain Issues like lack of availability of adequate and timely credit, high cost of credit, lack of technology support, lack of Marketing support, competition from large scale units etc. If SME’s could rely upon a source or a platform to overcome these issues, then there nothing that could stop an SME from contributing more to the country’s growth and economy.

KSMBOA – Karnataka Small & Medium Business Owner’s Association is formed to help SME’s in Karnataka in the challenges and Issues they face. KSMBOA would help SME’s in reaching out to the right individual funders/angel investors/venture funders/financial institutes/private financers to help funding of new ventures and other financial needs. Provide them with adequate resources and training on various aspects of technology and marketing. It would also provide networking platforms to association members through regular events and gatherings.  They would have abundant support and a platform for them to create, share and get ideas and solutions for issues they face.
